It has been an interesting journey to get to the point of being able to test for my junior black belt, and on the way I have been able to strengthen many skills, mental and physical, that I am sure will help me in life in many ways. I understand that achieving this is not “self perfection” nor is it the peak of my martial arts training. Over the years, I have learned from Master Langston that it is my attitude in life that determines my success, and not the events that occur.

Although I have learned many life skills during my Tang Soo Do training, such as integrity, effort, and courage, the most important thing to me is perseverance. It is important to me because many years ago, whenever I started a new activity, it would discourage me knowing that it would take a long time to become skilled at what I was doing. Now that I am at this point in martial arts, it always inspires me to keep practicing the activities I am engaged in in able to reach my goals.

Many of the ways that I think of things have changed during my training, but one thing that I always have had the same general idea of was what a black belt should be. I think a black belt should always be striving to become better as a martial artist and as a person. I also think a black belt should always be pushing his or her own limits, and should be an example to others. I think a black belt should not try to become the same exact person as someone he admires, but find his true self and try to become a better version of himself.

I remember that when I first started my Tang Soo Do training as a Little Dragon, it was all about what color belt I had, but now I realize that it is what I have achieved in my martial arts training and what I now know I can achieve in the future is what really matters. I know that my training is about achieving my personal best and not about what rank I am. When I reflect on myself, I honestly think that the days of my training...
