DO NOT TAKE THE NAME OF GOD IN VAIN

Exodus 20:7; Matthew 5:33-37.

God is the creator of all things and He is righteous in all things. He demands that we should not speak or use His name in a careless way. God’s name must be honoured and respected. It must only be used in a holy manner.

Janet and Sarah were very good friends who both loved Jesus. But Janet had a very bad habit. She liked to jest with the name of Jesus. She often called the name of Jesus carlessly and for useless and unimportant things. If she heard the sound of a mosquito or a housefly perched on her body, she would shout the Lord’s name. At other times, she swore repeatedly using the name of Jesus. Sarah was unhappy with her and told her to remember the commandment of God which says, “Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain” (Exodus 20:7).

God is holy and great. He must be respected and highly honoured by both young and old (Psalm 33:8; 89:7). As He is pure, so is His name. The name of God is holy and must be honoured by all. We know from the Holy Bible that God’s name is: (i) Glorious, and highly respected above all blessing and praise (Nehemiah 9:5). (ii) To be praised and adored (Pslam 113:3). (iii) Mighty and strong to protect the righteous (Proverbs 18:10).

Jesus taught His friends to pray to God in this manner, “... Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name” (Matthew 6:9). This shows that the name of God must be highly respected and worshipped. We must not use His name in a careless way.

2. DO NOT TAKE THE NAME OF GOD IN VAIN!

Exodus 20:7; Leviticus 19:12; Matthew 5:34.

The name of God is precious; no boy or girl should jest with or swear by...
