How far do you agree that health is the responsibility of the State, not of the individual?
Largely responsibility of State
- responsibility of State to provide basic welfare for citizens (basic human right)
- Individual tends to be ignorant, thus State is needed to promote healthy lifestyle
- Health standard of country affect economy (productivity of workforce)
- Only state has know-how and can pool resources to ensure quality of living within State (eg Singapore’s Medisave)
Counter:
Body belongs to individual, therefore it is their own responsibility (also basic human right to reject healthcare)
Defense:
As a citizen, and member of society, it is our responsibility to contribute to the greater good of the community
Disease is not just an individual concern, but a global one. What is your view?
Disease is more than just the individual’s concern
- in a globalised world, free movement of labour and peoples, health issues are consequently a global problem eg SARS
- Countries are interdependent, even if diseases were localized, economic problems resulting for the disease still tend to be global in magnitude.
- More important than physical disease is social disease eg racism, hate wars etc which hinder human development on a global scale.
- Research and development of drugs and treatment to combat diseases can be more efficient if we pooled our resources in a global concerted effort.
Counter:
It is individuals who contract diseases and hence individuals definitely have ot be concerned about their own health
Defense:
However, individuals do not exist in a bubble and are always part of a wider community.
