Position Paper # 2

Delivering Pizza

Before I read this case it never really crossed my mind how dangerous delivering pizzas could be. I will be more generous with my delivery tips from now on but that is not what we are here to discuss. Instead I will discuss the ethical issues present in this case and arguments for my course of action in dealing with these issues. So the first ethical issue that stood out to me was Dominos is not delivering pizzas to “dangerous” neighborhoods. Though these are mainly minority neighborhoods so the purposeful avoiding of these areas could be seen as racist, as it did to the Fobbs family. Any issues with racism obviously brings up a lot of ethical issues dealing with equality and human rights. Another ethical issue, or the other side of the dilemma, is the safety of Domino's employees. Every employee has a right to safety and should not be put willfully in harms way. So forcing these people to take deliveries into unsafe areas could be considered an unethical business practice. Now that we know what the ethical issues are here's what I think should be done. My solution is to keep policy the way it is now and not force employees into these red zones. I will use the rest of this paper to discuss why I believe my solution is right.

My first and main argument is that employee/human safety trumps discrimination every time. You can't argue that a person's life is less valuable than a person's feelings plus a pizza. Domino shas duties to both it's customers and employees. They have a duty to provide customer service but they also have a duty to keep their employees safe. While the employees have the right to not be in unsafe situations especially when they didn't sign up for it. The customer too has a right to service but there is a line and that has to do with company policies. I'm sure Dominos has standard delivery policies like distance, order size, and of course this safety policy.
