Introduction

Tata Motors is the leading automobile maker in India, focusing strongly on indigenisation. This focus has driven the Company to set up world-class manufacturing units with state-of-the-art technology (Tata motors, 2013). Its introduction of the Nano car received many media attention due to its targeted low price as the competitive advantage. To achieve the goal of a people’s car, Tata Motors refined its manufacturing process repeatedly, emphasizing on innovation and seeking after new design approaches from existing suppliers. Ever since globalization has taken its toil in our economy, making a car as cheap as the Tata nano without mutual cooperation with its suppliers and creative engineers to lower the cost price is almost impossible. Let us take a look at the value chain of Tata motor and how it brought about the birth of the Tata Nano.

Mr Mistry Cyrus was appointed director over Tata motors since May 2012 (Tata Motors, 2013), taking over the creator and initiator of the Tata Nano, Mr Ratan Tata. Back when Mr Ratan Tata was the director, he sees the need to design a product suitable for the road and weather conditions of India.
