While watching the 50-minute video, “21st Century Jet,” please answer the following questions.

Was the design of the Boeing 777 driven by market pull or technology push? Explain.

The Boeing 777 was driven by both technology push and market pull in the overall design. The company based the original model on technology basis, and then readdressed the design with a voice of customer influence. The overall design that was pursued was the consumer driven model and thus the market pull was the leading drive.

How was the customer involved in the design and development of the 777?

This aircraft was Boeing first model design off of the voice of customer rather than technological development. The main customer influencing the design was American Airlines. Boeing included a member of the customer in each group as well as allowing them to make numerous decisions on the components of the airplane. This lead for a product the customer wanted, at a price they could afford and Boeing was able to sell it.

What was top management’s involvement in the design and development of the 777?

If it wasn’t for the involvement of top management the concurrent engineering ideology would not have been implemented. This method of processing lead to major improvements and success within the company’s production. Top management changed the working environment and changed the overall design goals for the airplane.

What role did suppliers/subcontractors play in the design and development of the 777?

They played a large role in the process and overall planning of the aircraft. By including the suppliers and subcontractors scheduling the production went more smoothly. Also, including them allowed for cost savings and a better aircraft.
