Policing Development and Operation Trends

The organizational management, administration, and operational aspects of policing within policing organizations are slowly evolving depending on social needs and demands. Police departments are faced with a changing society and multiple groups of people in that today they are nothing like they were in the past and/or expected to become in the future. In the past, many police department were tainted with race and class-based biases against minority groups which impacted their effectiveness and credibility in the field. Many organizational and managerial steps have been enforced to help reduce these biases which result in discriminative acts. Although we are still dealing with the race and class-based biases in select places the emphases for many police departments today is countering the threat of terroristic behaviors domestically and internationally. Our present police departments are charged with ensuring September 11th and the sadness surrounding the Boston Marathon explosion never happen again in this country. Most of our resources and laws impacting criminal justice are tossed back and forth in attempts to ensure citizens will not eventually live in a police state through stated efforts of keeping us safe. The remainder of this paper will discuss the future of the police department and its overall intent to cut down on a variety of illegal activities. Specifically, it will highlight and discuss current administration efforts, trends in operations, potential legal changes, and the overall impact these changes could very well have in the local, state and federal policing organizations.
