Patient focused care has yet to be defined. It can be described as care based on patient preference or expectation. Dr. Kenneth Ludmerer, a profound internist and author, stated in the 2003 American College of Chest Physicians Convocation Speech, “What is patient-focused care? For me, the idea of patient-focused care can be simply stated. I believe it is the care we want our families to receive all the time. However, I do not mean to imply that it is the care we want just for our families. I believe it is the care we want all of our patients to receive”. (Irwin, 2004) This concept has driven many organizations to rethink and redesign their operations to become more “patient centered”.

The article “Re-shaping the American hospital” is an in-depth article on six different treatment facilities and aligning the management structure of the organization around the new way of doing things. The reorganization and restructure ensures patients receive the best possible care and chances of recovering to full health, in what are considered centers of excellence. The article talks about each hospital and although they are different, they have implemented changes within their facilities to improve the quality of care and life for patients. The six hospital outlined in this article are: (1) Alliant Health System (2) Beth Israel Medical Center (3) The Medical Center (4) Methodist Hospital of Indiana, Inc (5) Sentara Health System and (6) New England Medical Center. I will address two of the six facilities listed above and elaborate on their implemented changes and how it impacted the healthcare organization. (Weber, Weber, 1994)
