The National Rifle Association was formed in 1871, by Union Veterans Col. William C. Church and Gen. George Wingate. The primary goal of the association would be to “promote and encourage rifle shooting on scientific basis” (NRA.org, 2014). After being granted a charter by the state of New York on November 17, 1871, the NRA was founded. NRA later moved to another range in Sea Grit, New Jersey due to the political opposition of promoting marksmanship in NY. The NRA’s interest in promoting shooting sports among America’s youth began in 1903 when Secretary Albert S. Jones urged the establishment of rifle clubs at all major colleges, universities and military academies (NRA. org, 2014). In 1906, NRA’s youth programs were in full swing and had many boys competing in matches at Sea Grit. Today, youth programs are still a cornerstone of the NRA, with more than one million youth participating in NRA shooting sports events and affiliated programs, such as 4-H, the Boys Scouts of America, the American Legion, Royal Ranges, National High School Rodeo Association ,etc. (NRA.org, 2014).

Another shooting facility was built in Toledo, Ohio, were annual matches are held. The NRA offered their ranges to the governments and developed training materials. In 1949, the NRA established a hunter education program; due to the high interest they launched a magazine. Next, they moved on to law enforcement, in which they introduce the NRA Police Firearms Instructor certification program in 1960. Top law enforcement shooters compete in matches which are held in New Mexico.
