Sociological Perspective

As people the sociological perspective helps us understand how society is important in shaping our everyday lives. The way human behavior and its connection to society as a whole affect us. Symbolic interactionism would be the sociological perspective I would personally choose. In my textbook You May Ask Yourself (in chapter 1 on page 29) it states the definition of symbolic interactionsim as “a micro-level theory in which shared meanings, orientations, and assumptions form the basic motivations behind people’s actions.” It goes hand in hand to what the sociological perspective is because as people everything we do have a reason and a meaning. Whether it’s my family, my best friends, or just people I work with I unconsciously adapt depending on my surroundings. For example every Thanksgiving my family on my mom’s side has a tradition of going to my grandmothers’ house for food, fellowship, and of course just great quality time.

My family has been doing this even before I was born and I always wondered why it’s like that every year, but I guess it’s just the tradition. Before I get ready to attend this family function I always prepare myself by making sure I have on appropriate clothes, I’m well mannered, and have a good attitude. This is just some things I have always been taught to do when going around family especially elders its shows a sign of respect. Now when I’m with my friends Jordan and Frank things are totally different. Things are not so uptight. I can truly say I can be myself around them because they accept me for who I am and do not expect me to be anything more. When were all out I can dress anyway I please most of the time it’s just jeans and a t-shirt and that’s most likely what we are all wearing. At the gym we dress in the appropriate gym attire which mainly is basketball shorts and a t-shirt.
