You were an artisan, a linguist, a man of knowledge and wonder, a master in every crafts. With all your achievements that astonished every Filipino even after your existence. You even prophesized the future of Filipinos within a hundred years. It was full of reverie and passion – to express your discontent from the tyranny you have experienced during your time and your yearning to do something for your homeland. It could have been predictions out of your zealousness to your country. It was not just mere words but a nostalgic message to our generation.

It has been more than a hundred years since your prognosis of your homeland’s independence from Spain and other prospective colonization by another country. If there were patterns that make the world go on changing it could have been that history repeats itself; and it may have repeated itself a more than a hundred times now. The parallelism of the Spanish colonization to the colonization of the minds of Filipinos – enslaved by the riches of other countries. Neglecting the riches of our own. Devoured by the promises of fame and money. If it was tyranny that prevailed during your time, now it is corruption among your men – Greed. Their competition for power that is being instilled in the minds of younger generation. To fight for their own survival.

It has been a heartbreaking reality over the past years. This age-old corruption has mired the nation in poverty and enslaving every Filipino in every day of his existence. But the good thing is the Filipino’s character to fight back with resilience against an oppressor remains. The resilience that made it possible for the nation to survive hundreds of years of oppression from foreign countries. Today, reforms were instituted to weed out the crooks that have replaced the Spanish oppressors in your time. One by one, the guilty ones were held responsible and faced with the people’s urge to fight back and attain justice.
