Chapter 2

As industrial processes and systems have become more complex, teams—not individuals,

have become the basic working unit in modern engineering organizations. Because team environments foster interaction and open communication, and create a desirable setting for generating new ideas.

A Team is a formal work group consisting of people who work together strongly to achieve a common group goal. Teams are formed from a group of people, usually two or more, and are used for problem solving, or having a specific goal or task to be accomplished. Teams are becoming a very important feature in businesses today. It is important to understand team dynamics, the multiple elements of a team and the method in which a team operates. Team communication is one part that seems to be at the head of the list, and communication within a team can be seen as the foundation in which a team is built on and be responsible for the success or failure of that team.

Teams also have their own dis-advantages. A team may develop groupthink, the willingness of individual members to set aside their personal opinions and go along with the rest of the team members, even if they are wrong.

Group-think happens when individual group members lose the ability to think for themselves and rely on the group to make their decisions, or unable to express an unpopular opinion. It is a challenge for any Leader to create a working environment in which Groupthink is unlikely to happen as we know teams are capable of being much more effective than individuals but, when Groupthink sets in, the opposite can be true.

For a successful team, collaborative communication is mandatory. Collaborative communication making team meetings more productive and improving listening skills in a team.
