Training and career development is an important part of any strong, successful organization. To best understand the impact of training and development within an organization, one must be able to define training and development and understand the different methods for developing employees. It is also helpful to understand the relationship between employee development and organizational development and the role human resource management has in career development.

Training

Training is the process of teaching employee’s new skills and information, reinforcing existing knowledge, and establishing new ways to promote employee effectiveness such as system or process training. Effective training provides relevant skills and information that is easily transferred to the workplace. Training can include position-specific skills to help individual growth in a particular job position by focusing on material and information designated for that individuals’ strengths, weaknesses, and job requirements. Training is also used to improve workplace behavior by providing content relevant to specific behaviors. No matter the purpose for the training, participants will have the opportunity to develop or strengthen skills that will be applicable in the work environment (Salvi, n.d).

Organizational Development

Organizational development is the process of creating and sustaining change within an organization that will benefit the company, the employees, and possibly any community surrounding or impacted by the organization. Training plays into organizational development to help ensure that employees are up-to-date with any technology changes, process changes, or any other are necessary to improve performance. The need for organizational development does not necessarily mean that there is something wrong within the company, however, it does help to strengthen any weak areas by providing training, and addresses any issues that may be affecting the performance and growth of the company....
