1. An embedded system is a computer system that’s part of other device, such as an automobile or a washing machine. Some computer systems are embedded within other objects. For example, most modern automobiles contain embedded computers that monitor fuel consumption, control braking, and perform other valuable tasks. These types of computers – called embedded systems – are now a part of everyday life.

2. Most of the hardware in a personal computer falls into one of three categories. The CPU and other processors represent one of these categories. What are the other two? Memory & Peripheral devices.

Memory gives the computer the ability to remember ( store) information. Some types of memory stores information for a relatively brief period of time. A computer’s main memory, or RAM ( random-access memory), stores information only as long as the power is turned on. Other types of memory can store information even when the power is turned off. ROM (read-only memory) falls into this category.

Peripheral devices lie on the edges of the computer system. Their job is to provide a connection, or interface, to the world outside the computer system. Keyboards, mice, monitors, printers and modems are peripheral device.

3. Operating systems constitute one major category of software. What is the other major category?

Applications is a program designed to perform a useful task for a human. For example, a word processing is an application, and so is a program that allows a person to draw pictures, send electronic mail, or play a game.

4. The combination of an operating system and a particular type of CPU is often called a platform. For example, Windows running on an Intel CPU is a platform. The concept of a platform is an important one because software usually works only on a single platform.
