The strategy that I will choose for the homeless with disabilities or mental illness is the Tertiary prevention strategy. Many of the homeless people on the street suffer from mental illness, and disabilities. The Tertiary prevention strategy, also known as the third level of prevention is used for rehabilitation. Most of the homeless do not have access to regular health care; if they did it was possible that a primary prevention may have helped in some cases. Tertiary prevention is applicable to homeless with disabilities or mental illness in the following ways. Someone with severe mental illness is probably a danger to themselves and possibly others. Tertiary prevention methods can help by stabilizing the person. There are simple actions that can help them recover sooner and more fully, giving them the ability to go back into society and be able to function more normally. Tertiary methods can also reduce the risk of suicide in the mentally ill. Someone with a disability can benefit from Tertiary prevention in the following ways. The disability may be prevented from getting worse. If someone with a disability is not getting adequate treatment, the condition can worsen. Simple physical rehabilitation may strengthen the person allowing them to be more independent. Some disabilities will improve greatly with simple muscle building therapy. Someone that had polio as a child may have gone years without simple therapy for their muscles. The tertiary prevention method could have them functioning better in a short period. Once the disorder has established itself, tertiary prevention can help to prevent the disorder from becoming more complicated. Tertiary prevention, according to Price et al. (1980), is an attempt “to reduce the severity and disability associated with a particular disorder” (Burger 2014).
