Overcoming Barriers to Effective Communication
I. Cultures Differences (Hurn and Tomlin 2013, pgs 13-19
A. Differing in perception and viewpoint
1. In the message, we must try to explain it so that even those with different views and experiences can understand it.
2. We may need to learn about the background of those with whom we are communicating so that we can empathize with them.
3. Try and see the situation from that person's point of view
4. We should accept that people are different.
B. Differing in languages
5. Use simple direct natural language when communicating. if technical or unconventional terms cannot be avoided, they should be explained.
6. Words are not reality. Words as the sender understands them are combined
with the perceptions of those words by the receiver. Language represents
only part of the whole message, we filled the rest with perceptions

7. Eliminate the use of jargon, over complicated or unfamiliar words

8. Explain concretely what you want your team to do and not to do (Hill, 2013, pg 99)
9. Use easy to grasp examples as often as you can to convey your message
10. The sender should know the objective of his message and, therefore, he should arrange his thoughts in a proper order.
D. Avoid stereotyping Convey things of help and value to the listener (Hurn and Tomlin 2013, pgs 13-19
11. The subject matter of the message should be helpful to the receiver.
12. The need and interest of the receiver should specially be kept in mind. Communication is more effective in such a situation.
