Triple Bottom Line Analysis

Throughout the design process the team has considered the impact of our proposal on the community. In result of this, the current design has low impact with environmental, social and economic areas.

Environmental Impact

Devikulam Village currently uses straight, unfiltered bore water as their only source for water. Tests have shown the water to reach a minimum safe level for drinking water, this test also indicated salinity and bacteria were of greater concern for safe drinking water. Currently, salinity level is at a safe level, however due to use of groundwater usage of the bores, the process of salt-water intrusion will increase over time.

To keep a low impact on the environment, existing water sources and current water infrastructure will be used for this design. Existing infrastructure will be used by installing a filter into the current plumping network just before the storage tank. This method simply filters out bacteria and dirt to provide safe and clean drinking water. An installation of a system like this will not change the existing water source or pumping system, only the waste of the filtration system has to be considered.

Waste from the filtration system is a sludge-like material, the only harmful aspect from this material is the water born bacteria that it consists of. This bacteria is water born and due to water being extracted from the sludge, this bacteria will die quickly meaning this sludge is harmless, as the sludge is not harmful when water is extracted from it.

The design also addressed bacterial contaminants to the bore. A recommendation in order to reduce bacteria within the bore is proposed that cattle and human contaminants be kept isolated from bore areas.

Social Impact
