Problem Solving

Describe a scenario where you were unable to solve a problem. What stopped you, and what could you have done instead? Did you use the five steps in problem solving discussed in the lecture?

At the introduction of Windows 8 I was under the assumption that all PC’s running the OS were touch screen capable. I was setting up a new computer for a friend and was very confused as to why the touchscreen monitor would not work. I spent hours running through the PC’s settings and BIOS trying to understand it and was not getting anywhere. It frustrated me to no end because I have never had a problem like that and could not figure it out. Instead, and what I did later, I should have called Tech Support for the manufacture of the monitor and PC right away. The helped me solve the problem right away and taught me that not all PC’s built for Windows 8 are touch screen capable. I did not use the 5 steps to problem solving which cost me big time in my time management.

How did the problem in the live lecture use these five steps?

The live lecture explained and understood the problem first not being able to hang the blinds because the blinds weren’t wide enough to fit properly into the window space. She identified the requirements by determining the tools and materials she would need to hang the blinds. She then created a design by creating a double spacer to fit the blinds into space. She then hung the blinds and tested to ensure that they fit and worked.

How will you continue to use problem solving throughout your professional life?

Since learning the proper steps to take I will implement these steps into every complex problem I may have in my professional life. Taking the time to implement the problem solving process will save me time and frustration in solving issues.
