Why people tend to obey the authority is not the only concept that psychologist and philosophers are interested in, why do people disobey and how it is that the system of authority that is in place now; are other examples of interest to academics. Famed psychoanalyst, philosopher and historian Erich Fromm tries to give answers to these and other questions in his essay called “Disobedience as a Psychological and Moral Problem”. Fromm starts the essay by explaining that according to some myths that man has been disobedient since the beginning of history itself and continues to try to clarify through psychology and philosophy what is obedience, the human consciousness and how do people come to be disobedient.

This essay begins with Fromm’s main idea that man’s disobedience against the system of authority in place is beneficial to himself, that only through disobedience can man advance himself in any field. The only way man can create a “new paradise” for himself is to disobey and therefore through this disobedience he is forced to leave his “old paradise” (Fromm, 403). Two examples are given for this the story of Adam and Eve cast out of the Garden of Eden for disobeying God and eating the forbidden fruit, but by doing so freeing themselves from the dependency they have on God and earning their freedom. The other story is that of Prometheus who stole fire from the Greek Gods and gave it to man which evolves to man using fire to advance technologically. Prometheus was then punished for his disobedience. In both of these cases when disobedience was achieved something was lost and something more valuable was won.

To explain how it is that man comes to obey authority, he decides to answer why it is that man tends to obey and what makes it so difficult for him to disobey.
