Archery Lesson Plan

Activity Name: Archery

Skill Level: Level 2 and Level 3

Lesson Focus: This lesson focuses on nocking and firing an arrow.

Objectives: By the end of this lesson the students will be able to properly demonstrate how to properly nock an arrow and successfully preform the action of shooting an arrow.

Equipment required: 1 bow per 3 students, 5 arrows per group of 3 students, 1 target per group

Tactical Problem: Keeping proper technique throughout archery motion.

Lesson Topic: Teaching how to properly hold and fire a bow and arrow.

Nocking Cues:

1. Ensure arrow is in proper position

2. Repetition

3. Keep a good grip on arrow and bow

4. Steady throughout

5. Practice, practice, practice

Firing Cues:

1. Relaxed body

2. Practice same technique each time

3. Focus on target

4. Release

5. Follow through

Lesson (60 minutes): Archery

Warm Up (5-10 minutes): Have the students get into groups of three; each group should have at least one bow and five arrows between them. Go over safety precautions and notching and firing cues with students. Have one of the students in the group demonstrate shooting form towards other students (without an arrow), once that student has successfully established proper form, switch to the next student. Repeat until all students have properly demonstrated correct shooting form.

Activity (10-15 minutes): Have the students stay in the same groups of three. Demonstrate how to properly nock an arrow, once the students have a good sense on how to nock an arrow, have each student demonstrate nocking an arrow in each group. Once each student has nocked an arrow three times

Discussion Questions:

When is it safe to fire an arrow?

A: Nobody in line of fire or in shooting range.

Why is a consistent nock point important?

A: To ensure a consistent and accurate, shot it is important to keep proper form throughout and concentrate on the same motion.
