Case Analysis – Aircraft Performance

Aircraft Performance

I. Summary

After/during World War II there was a huge influx in the pace of both the development and production of aircrafts. A lot of this had to do with creating and maintain a superior air power throughout the war. The need for more strategic bombings and precise attacks drove many countries to further their development in aviation. The first jet aircraft that was flown was the Heinkel He 178, in 1939, followed by the world's first operational jet aircraft, the Me 262, in July 1942 then the world's very first jet-powered bomber in June 1943. Also around this time the commercial use of aircrafts to transport people was growing rapidly. Some challenges that came up at this time due to aircraft design was the shape of the windows caused cracks due to metal fatigue. The constant cycle of pressurizing and depressurizing eventually led to catastrophic failure of the fuselage.

II. Problem

When aircrafts were first used to transport people the shape of the windows would lead to cracks because of metal fatigue. This fatigue was caused by the cycles of pressurization and depressurization of the cabin, and would eventually lead to catastrophic failure on the plane's fuselage.

III. Significance of the Problem

The significance of this problem is that it was one of the first problems aircraft designers had to adjust for so that they could find a standard/safe way to implement the windows without destroying the fuselage.

IV. Development of Alternative Actions

Alternative Action 1. I would fix this problem by first using a stronger glass for the windows, such as fiber glass.

Advantages. Stronger glass means that they can last longer before cracking.

Disadvantages. Possible finical problems in using...
