Abstract

This paper reviews the analysis completed on Carly Fiorina as a leader and compares the results from this research to an actual professional self-assessment. It evaluates best practices for staff planning and organizing team functions. It provides an analysis of personal, political, and positional power as tools for effecting vision changes, and it contains information on appropriate conflict management and negotiation skills for effectively resolving organizational issues. In conclusion, the research on Carly Fiorina’s leadership trait, style and behavior were used to evaluate self-leadership skills and the needs for improvement and development to become an effective leader.

Carly Fiorina’s Leadership Analysis

Team-Building Practices, Theory, and Concept at Lucent Technologies

At Lucent, Carly Fiorina realized the importance of team building, and the need to have the right team to ensure a vision is delivered and goals are accomplished. During negotiation time between AT&T and the new company called Lucent, Carly and the finance team spent all-nighters for many weeks. It was during this period that Carly established a team-building practice to resolve their disagreements and finalize decisions; she named this process “the page-turning.” During this time, members of both teams, would gather to argue and debate any issues that arose until the group came to an agreement from both parties, and their progress and accomplishments were celebrated as a victory.

Fiorina encouraged group efforts on decision making; it was her technique and purpose to infuse a sense of camaraderie within her team members, her enthusiasm, and passion about the new company motivated her team of Executives. It was during tough times that Carly Fiorina seeks the collaboration from her team, she made sure all expectations were communicated and that everyone’s progress was measured.
