Process Improvement Plan

During this paper, the process of driving to work to will be analyzed, to determine a plan, which will be implemented to improve the process. Building on Week three’s assignment of identifying bottlenecks, I have continued to collect data regarding the time taken to drive to work in the morning. The data, will be reviewed and analyzed to determine upper and lower control limits within the sample means and the range of the data. The results of the analysis will give information on areas to improve to increase the efficiency of the process. This process, of collecting data, analyzing the data, and formulating an improvement plan is considered part of Statistical process control (SPC) (Chase, Jacobs, & Aquilano, 2006).

Discussion of Data

To determine the different values needed to construct both an X-bar and R chart we first need to have the base data. This is the information, which was gathered, over the past four weeks. The process of driving to work was used, and the summary of the data collected is listed in the following table.

Time taken to Drive to Work

Day Week 1 Week 2 Week 3 Week 4 Sample Means Sample Ranges

1 50 48 49 51 49.5 3

2 48 50 53 47 49.5 6

3 65 70 67 52 63.5 18

4 70 49 51 63 58.25 21

5 48 46 46 46 46.5 2

Table 1: Time take to Drive to Work.

Summary of Data Collected

From the information in table 1, we can see the time taken to drive to work on each of the five days of the week for the four weeks we gathered the data. Also presented in the table is the sample means of the individual days of the weeks over the four-week period as well as the sample ranges for the days of the week. Just by glancing at the table one can see that days three and four of the weeks have a considerable higher sample mean and range than the other three days of the week. The reason for these two days being higher can be explained, from the time left in the morning to drive to work. Days three and four I leave for work later in the...
