DQ1

Instinct Motivation-Inborn patterns of behavior that are biologically determined rather than learned.

Drive-reduction approaches to motivation-Theories suggesting that a lack of basic biological requirements such as water produces a drive to obtain that requirement (in this case, the thirst drive)

Arousal approaches to motivation-the belief that we try to maintain certain levels of stimulation and activity, increasing or reducing them as necessary.

Incentive Approaches to Motivation-Theories suggesting that motivation stems from the desire to obtain valued external goals, or incentives.

Cognitive Approaches to Motivation-Theories suggesting that motivation is a product of people’s thoughts expectations and goals-their cognitions.

* Drive Motivation- motivational tension, or arousal, that energizes behavior to fulfill a need.

One of the approaches that interest me the most is the drive reduction approach. The way that it works is through a person’s drive to fulfill a particular need. In order to satisfy the drive a person will become motivated to meet biological needs or even psychological needs. An example of drive reduction to motivations is the drive for thirst or hunger. When a person becomes hungry they are driven to eat or consume some sort of nutrients. This type of approach to motivation is a related to homeostasis. Homeostasis is the body’s tendency to maintain a steady internal state. Although this approach to motivation provides a good explanation of biological needs to motivation it does not explain motivation that stems from thrill seeking or curiosity. These behaviors suggest that not all individuals seek to reduce all drives.
