Discus the role of leadership and how it can impact organizational performance

Leaders inspire and lead others to achieve a designated goal. The effectiveness of leadership is critical to build confidence and support among the people in the organization.

The role of effective leaders ply in the success of an organization is very visible with the outcome of the organizational performance. For example, Douglas Conants at Campbell Soup Co. led an organization by reversing declining revenue and employee moral with vision, direction and strategies for success. The strategies pursued by Conants were:

1) Setting goals clearly, with direction and clear vision

2) Motivation, empowering employees directly

3) Open clear line of communication, aligning people

4) Developing professional opportunities, updating talents of employees

5) Stimulating innovation to keep up the momentum in the company (Hellriegel & Slocum 2010 p.289-291).

Effective leadership produces change and results in the organization as a whole resulting increased productivity, quality, profitability, and overall employee satisfaction.

Mulally has transformational leadership style. His leadership is a combination of visionary, inspiring and risk taker. For example, as a visionary, he set a goal to make Fords North America operations as well as the entire company profitable by 2011. Mulally also showed his thoughtfulness and understanding of technology, culture and related factors when he laid out his strategy to achieve his goal by directing Ford to build eco friendly small cars, and electric cars by 2010.
