Selecting the Right Communication Channel

Scenario I Answer to Question 1:

As a Marketing Manager, for communication the task developing a strategy for entering the new beverage into the global market I will use the face-to face communication supplemented with the PowerPoint presentation. According to Robbins & Judge in Chapter 11 of the Organizational Behavior, the face-to-face communication is the richest communication channel. The speed of the communication is critical in this situation, as the task needs to be started as soon as possible. The instant feedback of the team is also very important so that any potential issues are dealt with immediately as there is only one week to develop the strategy. The PowerPoint presentation will facilitate the face-to face discussion, as the visual presentation of the product will enhance the team’s understanding of the product characteristics as well as by adhering to the presentations points, I will make sure no critical items are omitted.

During the meeting with the team I will first provide the team members the details of the task and outline the product information. Then I will explain the urgency of the task to mobilize the team to start working immediately, and structure major strategy points and options that the scope of the task is clear enough to assign responsibilities. Questions will be asked this time and discussion promoted to ensure that everybody understand goals. At the end of my presentation, I will outline the path to the successful completion of this project and emphasize my support to every team member to motivate the team.

Videoconferencing is an option I would choose if members of a team are in different locations. Most advantages of the face-to-face communication illustrated above would be valid for this communication task. The direct personal contact will be replaced with the videoconferencing interface....
