Procrastination is the act of putting off needlessly. Procrastination can be very counterproductive. People tend to procrastinate because they have a project of some sorts to do, and they seem to have very little or no interest in the project and tend to put it off for a later time. Which in turn leads to you having to rush to meet deadlines, incomplete work, and fluff just to fill space. This type of work will not be tolerated at most companies and organizations and can lead to termination. Procrastination is not worth any of that; it is too easy to sit down, plan out what you want to do and make it happen.

The first step in preventing procrastination is personalization. This is what I would tell me junior colleague, he needs to sit down and personalize this project; make it meaningful to himself that way he will be more motivated to get started on the project instead of letting it just sit. When projects, and anything of that nature do not pertain to us, we seem to feel like that it is not as important or as revelavent but in actually it is. Projects of all kinds are bestowed upon us because somewhere along the line we have proven to our higher up that we can handle more responsibility.

When my colleague makes it a personal situation, I would then recomend that he take time to sit down and plan everything out to be the way he wants it to be. There is no reason to take short cut with this step. It has been proven time and time again that a well planned project is a better project. There is nothing wrong with fling by the seat of your pants sometime, heck it might even make you work better, but for the most part people tend to put better ideas onto paper with precise planning.

After he has carefully and methodically planned his course of action out, the next step would be to track down materials and set up the logistical part of this equation. This means tracking down were the supplies are at, where’s the best place to buy them, how much to buy,...
