Demonstrative Communication
Communication; what is communication? Communication has various meanings. It can be defined as a way of learning new concepts and skills; a way of making sure a job gets done; a way of maintaining your relationships; it is also a tool to help us get along; but most of all it also can be defined as “the process of sending and receiving messages” (Cheesebro, O’Connor & Rios, 2010).
Demonstrative Communication, however, is defined as the process of sending and receiving messages and involves exchanging thoughts, messages, or information. This form of communication includes verbal and nonverbal, written or visual, sending, and receiving of messages (Nayab, 2010). I would venture to say that it also includes facial expressions, body language, gesture, and posture.
Effective and Ineffective Demonstrative Communication
First let us define what effective communication is. It is more than plainly understanding the information of the message sent, it involves possessing a shared understanding of the feelings, thoughts, wants, needs, and intentions of both the sender and receiver. With ineffective communication the message gets lost, and the intentions are not clear.
An example of how demonstrative communication can be effective occurred when I was on a phone call with a prospective new associate. I always made sure that I spoke with a smile in my voice, which in turn allowed me to make that person feel better about the choice she made to join our organization. It also made it easier to get the necessary information needed for them to get started on becoming a new associate. However, that same phone could also be an example of how demonstrative communication can be ineffective.
