Drawing upon what you have learned about City Road, outline some of the ways in which differences are made and remade on a street that you know.

The street I will be evaluating is Exford Road, Lee Green, Lewisham which is very similar from social and economic aspects to City Road, but on a much smaller scale. In order to consider how differences are created here I will focus on some of the comparisons discussed by City Road Cardiff (Making social lives on City Road’, 2011). I intend to focus on people, their social lives, plus changes over time and how these can show differences being made and remade.

The people who reside on Exford Road are very diverse and as seen on City Road, the residents all use space differently depending on the facilities and resources available. The variation from social housing to large private homes is a great example of differences being made and remade, as it clearly shows how perceptions about social standing occur. The social housing section tends to have smaller houses on large estates, with poorly kept gardens, disused old cars, abandoned bicycles compared to the affluent section which has much larger, well maintained houses, gardens and expensive cars. Even things like rubbish bins left out can create small differences in comparison, and even lead to social exclusions and stereotypes based on these notions. However, like with City Road the neighbourhood does have a sense of community and people live together and feel connected. The differences   through housing doesn’t cause a bad effect, as like in City Road these social groups successfully co-exist, with their own created identities, just as the City road residents who are connected by work, where they live and not by social status.

The same can be looked as a inequalities, as the sizes of the houses, parking and garden spaces are not the same. This is accepted as a usual from the people living in them residential areas because each...
