Project Overview

History of the White Coat Ceremony (WCC) initiated in 1993 and is a relatively new ritual for Dental schools. The WCC marks a student’s transition from the study of preclinical to clinical health sciences; as part of their first steps into a dental career students at the Arizona School of Dentistry & Oral Health (ASDOH) will be presented with their first white coats in ceremonies typically held in the summer.

The ASDOH White Coat Ceremony welcomes entering dental students and aids them in establishing a psychological contract for the practice of dentistry. The ceremony emphasizes the prominence of compassionate, community and educational leaders serving those in need. The ceremony features the following:

* Narration of the Oath to The profession. The student’s publicly acknowledge the responsibilities of the profession and their willingness to assume such obligations in the presence of family, friends and faculty.

* Cloaking of students in their first white coats

* A speech by a distinguished Dentist role model

* Celebration at a reception with students’ invited guests.

Preliminary project Schedule

December – January

* The date of White Coat Ceremony is to be decided; keynote speaker to be chosen by the Dean. Communicate with D3 President and inform them that when they elect their D4 president and Vice President that they will be asked to speak at the WCC.

* Go over Budget with Director of Business Operations and move funds around if needed.

January – February

* Dean to communicate with Keynote speaker about addressing the new class at the WCC, duration of his speech (usually 20 minutes), The Dean to communicate the inspirational intent of the speaker’s speech.

* Follow up e-mail by Administrative Coordinator (also the project manager) outlining the guidelines and confirming the address of the venue and duration of the speakers speech.
