Wal-Mart

Sam Walton opened his first Wal-Mart store in 1962 in Rogers, Arkansas. Wal-Mart Inc. was publically incorporated on October 31, 1969. By the early seventies the company was growing considerably. The first distribution center was opened as well as the home office in Bentonville, Arkansas. Wal-Mart continued to grow throughout the seventies, by the end of the decade the company was operating 276 stores in eleven states and was the first retail company to reach $1 billion in sales.

Growth for this mega retailer continued throughout the eighties. Wal-Mart acquired 92 Kuhn’s Big K stores and built its largest distribution center in Palestine, Texas. In 1983 the first Sam’s Club opened in Midwest City, Oklahoma and for the eighth year Wal-Mart was ranked number one in Forbes magazine as a wide-ranging retailer. That same year the famous Wal-Mart Greeters were introduced in all of its locations and Wal-Mart acquired all Woolco Stores in the United States. By the end of the eighties the first Supercenter opened and ninety nine percent of Wal-Mart stores had implemented bar-code scanning. Wal-Mart was now operating in twenty-nine states.

In 1990 Wal-Mart was named number one retailer in the nation. Wal-Mart’s product line “Sam’s American Choice” was introduced in 1991 and Wal-mart stepped into the international market by opening a retail store in Mexico City. By the end of 1992 Wal-Mart was operating in 45 states in the United States and expanded into the United States territory of Puerto Rico.
