Using Team Charters to Improve Performance

Learning team charters are written statements of an assigned group of people. The function of these charters is to help determine the strengths and weaknesses within that particular group, define the teams goals, set ground rules for the team, and determine how to provide conflict management if needed. Ultimately, if used properly, the charter should be an effective tool for building skill level and aiding in the learning process of the team. As stated, there are many aspects of the team charter. The main item of interest for this paper is the process of using individual differences to improve team performance.

To gain information about members of the group, individual assessments can be performed. Some of these include personality types, listening skills, and trust in others assessments. With the information from these assessments, teams can begin to get an idea of the individual differences among the group. These differences should be recognized and used to improve team effectiveness.

Within our particular group there are multiple personality types. The first being extroverts who are task oriented, analytical, and decisive. This type of person is someone who would represent the team as a leader. They would be a good candidate for reporting or conducting team presentations. In contrast, the team embodies introverts who are people oriented, sensing, and aware of feelings. This would be a good behind the scenes person. They may act as an intermediary, counsel, or may help encourage performance.

As with the personality types the group contains varying levels of listening skills. These range from 38-52 with 15 needing improvement to 75 being a good listener. The range of the group is in the general vicinity of each other however, there are some who are better listeners than others. This...
