QUESTION 1:

‘THE DESIGN OF PRODUCTS AND SERVICE SHOULD BE INTERGRATED WITH OTHER OPERATIONS MANAGEMENT CONSIDERATIONS’. CRITICALLY EVALUATE WHY THE DESIGN OF PRODUCTS AND SERVICES SHOULD NOT BE DONE IN ISOLATION.

All products and services that gets designed can be considered as having three aspects

1. A Concept, which is the understanding of the nature, use and value of the service or product

2. A Package of component product and services that provide those benefits defined in the concept

3. The Process which defines the way in which the component product and services will be created and delivered.

It is considered to be a mistake to separate the design of products and services from the process which will produce them. The process that merges the design of products and services is sometimes called interactive design. The benefit to this is the reduction in the elapsed time for the whole design activity, from the concept (use and value of the service or product) through the market introduction. This is called the time to market. The benefit of this is increase in competitive advantage.
