Domestic Violence

Some of the implications that come when a person is being abused with domestic violence are a number of things. First we will look at the intervention aspect of a person who has domestic violence then we will touch base on the prevention part of a person who has been abused by domestic violence.

When a person is being abused by their partner whether it is the female or the male that is being abused many things can take place to help the intervention aspect of it all. Some of the tips to follow when a person is being abused are:

1. Evaluate the immediate safety needs of the victim.

Is the person in current danger? Where is the criminal now?

Does the person need the police to be called immediately?

2. Evaluate the pattern and history of the abuse.

Evaluate the criminals physical, sexual, or psychological tactics.

Certain questions will be asked like:

“How long has the violence been going on? Has your partner forced or harmed you

sexually? Have others been harmed by your partner? Does your partner control your

activities, money, or children?”

3. Evaluate the connection between domestic violence and the patient’s health issues.

Evaluate the impact of the abuse on the victim’s physical, psychological, and spiritual wellbeing: What is the degree of the person of interest control over the victim.

4. Evaluate the victim’s current access to advocacy and support resources.

Are there community resources available to help the individual? Have they tried to use the resources? What was the result? What resources would help the person with their health, as well as a care provider are they immediately available for them to help?

5. Evaluate patient’s safety: Is there future risk of death or significant injury/harm

(lethality) due to the domestic violence?

Ask about the criminal’s plan: was there any use of weapons, increasing speed in frequency or the severity of the violence, use of alcohol or drugs as...
