Introduction

The General Electric Company (GE) was started in 1892 with the merger of two electric power companies: Edison General Electric Company and The Thomson-Huston Company. GE was established in a carriage barn in the backyard of the Chief consulting engineer (Charles Proteus Steinmetz) by then an already well established industrial scientist at the time. Thomas Alva Edison was one of the fathers of GE the second was Charles A. Coffin a shoe manufacturer from Lynn, Massachusetts. Coffin was born in 1844 in Fairfield, Maine and at the age of 18 moved to Lynn, Connecticut to work at his uncle’s shoe factory. Later on Coffin opened his own shoe factory and became a successful business man. In 1883 a town businessman named Silas A. Barton discussed with Coffin about bringing in a new business to Lynn; the American Electric Company from New Britain, Connecticut. The American Electric Co. needed a sound businessman to run the organization while its major asset (Elihu Thompson) prodigy inventor continued to work. Coffin took the job. Now because of competition from Edison and his Electric Co, Coffin purposed to Edison the merger of both companies. So, in 1892 the two companies became, the General Electric Company (GE). The only condition that was made was that Coffin would become the first (CEO) of the newly created company and he was. Coffin was a very different man compared to most businessmen these days. He was a gentleman, kind and gracious. Coffin would always call his underlings his associates. He would always suggest things and never order them to be done and Coffin always asked for suggestions from his associates small or large and only then makes his decision. He was so down to earth that he took the time to hand write business proposals to important customers.
