Immigration

As mentioned above, unemployment is today one of the most important problems in Spain. But there is also another huge problem that is closely linked to the problem of unemployment: illegal immigration. Regarding this problem, Spain faces three conflicting points: the border with Morocco, the Canary Island and the process of government’s regularization. The main objective in finding a solution for the problem of illegal immigration is to finish with the deaths of illegal immigrants while coming to Spain. But immigration is not only a Spanish problem but also a problem throughout the European Union. With regards to this topic, there were held some meetings by the presidency of the EU and the Spanish government in Finland recently. The target of these meetings was the regulation of immigration. Concerning the already mentioned three conflicts, the first one conflict is the border with Morocco in Ceuta y Melilla (Spanish cities in Africa). These have many problems with illegal immigrants and the conflict is getting worse and worse recently. They jump over the wall and injure themselves. As reaction to that development, the army was sent near to the border by the government in order to solve the situation.

After this problem is more or less stabilized through this measure, the current problem lies in the immigrant’ centers (ONGs) now. Due to the huge amount of illegal immigrants, the available beds in the ONGs are not sufficient for all immigrants. Especially the children’s situation is alarming. The two NGOs that are focused on children have about one hundred beds, but about 300 beds are necessary. The result is usually that the children escape and become homeless on the streets and begin to commit criminal offences.

Because of their minor age, they cannot be detained by the police and get be taken back to the centres they escaped from. Once back there, they escape again. The situation shows clearly that major economic help from the EU and the...
