Mass tourism is a very different idea than sustainable tourism. Mass tourism complies of simply its name, mass numbers of people visiting an area. The idea of allowing the transportation of large amounts of people in short periods of team allows for a country to host an uncontrollable amount of people. Improvements in transportation and technologies have made mass tourism easily available to growing nations, and bring larger crowds of tourists to countries than ever experienced before.

Sustainable tourism, on the other hand, is a very different story. The idea of sustainable tourism is the idea of creating as little impact on the environment and culture of the community one is visiting as possible. Sustainable tourism also helps stimulate the economies and generate cash flow throughout the local people and markets. This idea is very crucial to the ecosystems of the nations, and ensures that development of the nation is not harmed and is positive for both the visitor and the host community.

Over the years, we have seen great landmarks ruined by tourism. Take for example the Great Barrier Reef; This reef is the largest reef system in the world and can even be seen from space. The system is home to billions of micro-organisms, and has a very fragile ecosystem and structure. But over the years, it has become one of Australia’s most visited tourist attractions and is now overwhelmed by pollution and abuses by tourists. Without proper care and a sustainable tourism plan, the Great Barrier Reef is expected to disappear within the next 100 years.
