Writing skills are an essential part of being a good lawyer. It is the fundamental action taken by a lawyer in order to communicate with his/her clients and when contacting other law firms. Adequate writing skills are therefore needed in order for a lawyer to present his/her assessment in a clear, concise way whereby their clients can comprehend and contact them if required. Good writing skills can improve the overall morale between a lawyer and their client as it leaves little room for confusion and should be straight to the point and in plain English. It is important lawyers have good writing skills, as many budding lawyers do not have that luxury of having a legal secretary and will have to undertake the task themselves. The significance of having good writing skills can be seen throughout a lawyer’s daily work. If a lawyer does not possess these basic skills there can be a lack of confidence shown by their client, which may result in loss of clients/business. In conclusion the consequence of having sub-par writing skills is far worse than the rewards that would be had by lawyers with efficient writing skills. In my opinion it’s a necessity for lawyer to have competent vocabulary and use of formal language, to ensure a professional relationship with clients and other law firms. To reiterate this point many colleges today put great emphasis on the skill of communicating through the application of writing.
