Abstract

A data base is an electronic filing system. It is a systematized collection of data that can be accessed immediately and manipulated by a data processing system for a specific purpose (Dictionary.com, 2013). It is a quick way for a computer program to access the organized information that it is seeking. Traditional databases are organized by fields, records, and files. A field is a single piece of information; a record is one complete set of fields; and a file is a collection of records. For example, a telephone book is analogous to a file. It contains a list of records, each of which consists of three fields: name, address, and telephone number. To access information from a database, you need a database management system (DBMS). This is a collection of programs that enables you to enter, organize, and select data in a database (Webopedia, 2013).

Database Requirements

The number one requirements for building a database system is time that it takes to devote to creating the database. There must also be scalability. According to Shelly & Rosenblatt (2012), scalability means that a system can be expanded, modified, or downsized easily to meet the rapidly changing needs of a business enterprise.

The Advantages of Moving the Scheduler to a Data Base Management System (DBMS)

Improved availability: One of the principle advantages of a DBMS is that the same information can be made available to different users.

Minimized redundancy: The data in a DBMS is more concise because, as a general rule, the information in it appears just once. This reduces data redundancy, or in other words, the need to repeat the same data over and over again. Minimizing redundancy can therefore significantly reduce the cost of storing information on hard drives and other storage devices. In contrast, data fields are commonly repeated in multiple files when a file management system is used....
