Never forget your ABC’s was one of the most important rules of life we learned in kindergarten. We learned simple common courtesies that we should never forget. My ABC’s are an acronym for attitude, behavior and choices. The Franciscan values of Cardinal Stritch are in complete alignment with my view on attitude, behavior, and choices in life. The Franciscan values that I will describe in this essay are respecting creation, making peace, and creating a caring community.

All living creatures deserve to be treated with dignity and respect. The Franciscan value of respecting all creation through respecting all creatures makes sense. There are some characteristics that are not within our control such as: age, gender, race or disability. There are those that we have more control over such as our choice of religion, current job, or our weight. Despite what our differences are we should accept and respect each other.

Respecting creation through promoting human dignity and empowerment of people is just as crucial for me as well. Some song lyrics are degrading to women as well as disrespectful to many types of people. We should show our children through our example how to speak to others and treat them. Our actions and involvement in our children’s lives will directly relate to how they will treat and respect others. The numerous acts of violence in our communities are discouraging. By promoting human dignity and empowerment of people, the effect of all the happenings in our communities may be easier to withstand and change. Empowerment will bring about hope, hope will bring about action and action will bring about change.

The next Franciscan value that is meaningful to me is making peace and working for conflict resolution. This value is essential in my life. I try to display this fruit of the spirit daily. To allow...
