Comprehensive Supporting System as Sustainable Competitive Advantage

SHTM provides students a comprehensive supporting system that facilitates all kinds of teaching and research activities in its newly built teaching hotel Hotel ICON. The whole school as part of the hotel building consists not only lecture halls and function rooms but a wine lab, a training restaurant called Bistro 1979, several technology labs and a well-designed supporting centre that facilities research, teaching and learning functions. The Vinoteca Lab and Bistro 1979 are currently holding all kinds of Food and Beverage courses in SHTM. Two full-functioned bar areas and a separate well-equipped western kitchen enable students to put the knowledge into practice during and right after classes. The Samsung Digital Lab which contains 70 notebook computers with wireless internet access is designed to help students in taking research and learning with latest technology in the industry. Che-woo Lui Hotel and Tourism Resource Centre holds a full range of teaching materials such as books, reports and more than 150 well-known international journal titles from the fields of hospitality, tourism and food science. In addition, it is also equipped with facilities like computers, display screens and projectors for group project and discussion. Furthermore, Hotel ICON, as wholly owned by PolyU, not only serves as the school building but provides substantial training opportunities for students to gain practical knowledge in semester breaks.

Hotel ICON and the series of newly imported facilities as precious resources enable SHTM to forge and maintain strong links and corporation with industry partners and other educational organizations. Although many other hospitality schools also have their teaching hotels, SHTM claims its approach to be unique and the hotel is tailor-made that completely integrates teaching, learning and research in a full-service environment.
