Week 5 Tutorial Questions: Families

“Now women can be mothers and work, too”

Question 1: “a good mother is someone who focuses on her children rather than work.” What are your views on this? What about what constitutes a good father? Why?

The view I have on this agrees with the articles quote “a good mother is someone who focuses on her children rather than work”. A good mother will want to look after the child after childbirth and make sure the baby is as healthy as possible during the 13 months off work. Work is important, but it cant be more important than a new-born or infant. The father’s role is important in during maturity leave, so that women can possibly get back their jobs. Although their job isn’t as essential as the mother, fathers are often working while the mother is at home looking after the child.

Question 2: Maternity/Paternity rights are relatively new concept. What do you perceive is different about society today, to make these new rights more important than ever?

These new rights to women are very important and significant not just for women, but society and also Australia. Today’s society is changing to keep up with the rest of the developed nations across the world. Like many other countries, Australia seeks fairness for both male and female and these changes with maternity and paternity leave establish fairness between the sexes and it gives mothers and females the opportunity to continue working.

Question 3: Why does the author argue gay marriage is so important and how is it considered to be conservative?

The author argues that gay marriage is important to society because when couples make vows to each other no matter if they are gay or straight it makes society and the community stronger because of support they have for one another.
