One of the important issues existing today is a growing trend in the world’s energy consumption. Goosen (2012, 107) provides three important reasons of saving energy, which are diminishing energy supplies, increasing energy costs and preventing causes of global warming. There is a large volume of published studies describing the enormous potential of green buildings in solving these problems. It can be done by increasing energy efficiency and optimizing energy consumption in buildings by using renewable energy sources and reducing energy waste (Rockwoolasia, 2013). Within this field, this paper will focus on the relevance of green schools. The green school was chosen to discuss because it is one of the significant public buildings which has influence on people in it. They are known as Eco-schools around the world because these buildings help to tackle not only the environmental issues, but also help to promote high performance of students in environmentally friendly and healthy educational institutions over the long-term (Uhl and Anderson 2001, 4). It is worth to note that green schools are not a one-off project; the main purpose is to wisely use environmental management systems with constructions of schools. The performance of a green school project fosters a stronger sense of citizenship and a sense of teamwork for teachers, students and society; and leads to concern for peace and responsibility for surrounding environment. This essay will deal with the following aspects of question: in the first part of the research project will be examined the reasons for necessity to build green schools considering one of the significantly intense global issues, which is global warming. The next part of this research project will consider benefits of green schools such as providing a healthy and productive learning environment, financial savings and reductions in both teacher and student absenteeism.
