Media Violence Influences Children

In recent research children that have been exposed to media violence such as television, music, movies, and video game violence represent a serious health risk to themselves and others. While some parents and adults see this type of media exposure as harmless others have seen acts of aggression portrayed in ways to raise concern on what is being viewed by children. Children may reenact scenes of violence out of role playing, but these really are acts that have been visually imprinted in a child’s mind on how to react to certain situations. It is definitely up to parents and consenting adults to monitor the media that is being presented to children. The impact of media violence upon a child is dependent on parental control. In many cases, long term violent media exposure has led to aggressive behavior and violent acts by children.

During a child’s early years he or she should receive information that will produce healthy responses to normal everyday situations. Therefore whatever a child’s see they will imitate so it is crucial to expose children to positive role models as well as the types of programs or visual media they view. Visual media can educate and misinform ( Mwema ,A 2011). While children can learn aspiring things from being exposed to positive visual media like nature shows, learning channels. They also can learn risky behaviors such as smoking, drinking alcohol, and sexual behaviors that are inappropriate for them by viewing media that glamorizes such behaviors.

As the world of entertainment grows increasingly violent, children today are becoming more intrigued. Prolonged exposure to such media portrayals results in increased acceptance of violence as an appropriate means of solving problems and achieving one’s goals.
