1. IN REFERRING TO THE OPEN PROFILE AND THE CLOSING CASE FOR THIS CHAPTER, DISCUSS THE CHALLENGES REGARDING COPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY THAT COMPANIES IN THE APPAREL INDUSTRY FACE IN ITS SUPPLY CHAIN AROUND THE WORLD?

Corporate social responsibility (CSR) has developed to into a subject of growing importance. Companies are presently dealing with the pros and cons of the operations in the countries that they produce in around the world. There may be numerous benefits however the social issues seem to be increasing and owners need to take responsibility for their actions. Lack of equal opportunity, poverty, employee safety & welfare, both of the home countries and the host countries and consumer concerns are some of the downfalls mentioned. The opening profile emphasized the subcontracting of child labor by Primark while the case study emphasized the issue of work treatment & conditions by Nike. In addition, workers were underpaid and punished for refusing overtime. They were not given any day off and found themselves working 60 hour work weeks. They were denied access to toilets and fresh drinking water on the average workday. At this level, this is where ethicality of the companies steps in and is being compromised is being, with varying legal and cultural limits across borders.

One of the more important questions a company should answer is

how auditing hitches are being dealt with? In order to meet the terms and conditions with higher standards of CSR, some firms have to undergo active research and auditing procedures on the firms are hired in their supply chain. Discrepancies between reality and audit results do exist as we don’t always know what is going on. But as mentioned in the opening profile, some suppliers are determined to keep their breaches from being discovered (Deresky).One very important point to note is the difficulty in auditing as sweatshops can always cover the bad things...
