Installing Windows Server Networking

Windows Server 2008 R2 is designed around specific roles and features. These roles are primary duties that the server will perform. The features are something that helps the servers perform these specific roles. For Windows Server 2008 R2, there are a number of roles and features that help the server run smoothly for its primary duty. The roles for Windows Server 2008 R2 are:

• Active Directory Certificate Services – This provides the service for managing and creating public security keys used in most aspects of security currently.

• Active Directory Domain Services – This stores information about users, computers, and devices on the network in a domain. With these resources being members of a domain, the information contained on the server is secure.

• Active Directory Federation Services (ADFS) – Provides SSO capabilities across organizations, allowing multiple Web application authentication using a single account. This is done by sharing user identities and access rights once trust has been established between federations.

• Active Directory Lightweight Directory Services – Provides a directory service that can store information specific to an application that is separate from the organizations main Active Directory. This is a non-OS service, and multiple instances of this can be supported on a server.

• Active Directory Rights Management Services – Provides protection on supported documents and can control the actions that authorized users can perform on these documents.

• Application Server – Made up of a number of components that are responsible for the management and deployment of .NET Framework 3.0 applications.

• Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) – This allows servers to assign (lease) IP addresses to computers and other devices that are enabled as clients on the network.

• DNS Server – This is used to resolve host names to IP addresses for IPV 4 and IPV 6.
