1. What is diversity? Why is diversity valued?

Diversity is the condition of having or being composed of differing elements : variety; especially : the inclusion of different types of people (as people of different races or cultures) in a group or organization (“Merriam-Webster”, 2013)

Diversity is valued because our differences lead to growth as a society or can lead to violence and hatred. Either way, the outcome will change the environment permanently. If you choose use each others strengths to better your surroundings, then the community will be all the better for it. If you choose to hate and kill those different than you, the community will crumble and effect more than just the two feuding groups.

2. What is ethnocentrism? In what ways can ethnocentrism be detrimental to a society?

Ethnocentrism is the belief in the inherent superiortity of one’s own ethnic group or culture. (“Dictionary.com”, 2013)

Ethnocentrism can be detrimental to a society because it can lead to wars, hatred and predjudice towards others. It causes individuals judge other because of the way they look or the simple fact that they don’t believe in the same things. It causes people to use themselves as a guideline for others, that would work if they were perfect, but no human is perfect.

3. Define emigration and immigration.

Emigration is the act of leaving one country or region to settle in another; migrate. (‘Dictionary.com”, 2013)

Immigration is the arrival of settlers in a new country: the act of entering a new country to settle permanently. (“Bing.com”, 2013)

To the people where you started your journey you are an emigrant. To the country you are traveling to, you are an immigrant.
