Question 1: PLAN We want to analyze the unemployment data that Anjali is referring to in order to determine her reasoning for concluding that a university degree for a landed immigrant will not help her when trying to find a job. We will give explanations of the data other than Anjali’s conclusion. Additional data that Statistics Canada should collect will be suggested. We will answer the question – “Are Canadian employers really not in favor of hiring immigrants?” or is there additional statistics that needs to be examined before drawing this conclusion.

Anjali is referring to the unemployment rates between landed immigrants and Canadians which were born in Canada. The unemployment rates for both males and females in the landed immigrant category are substantially and consistently lower than the unemployment rates for the population born in Canada. This data has led Anjali to assume that a university degree will not help her when she is trying to find a job. However, there are many other explanations that can help explain the high unemployment rate among landed immigrants in Canada:  Quality of Education: The skills and education that immigrants acquire in other countries outside of Canada may not be up to standards for the Canadian work force. This leads to great numbers of over qualified workers doing blue-collar jobs, and many under qualified immigrants having to take additional courses or training to ensure their skills are useful in Canadian workforce. Language Skills: The language barrier between immigrants and Canadian citizens can be large. In the modern day workforce in Canada, English and French reading, writing, and communication skills are a must. Immigrants that are fresh of the boat may not possess these capabilities.
