COMPETITIVE ANALYSIS

CanGo’s competitors include businesses that not only sell hardcopy books online, but also those that stream music and offer eBooks. CanGo’s competitors in the online book market are Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Random House, Harlequin Books, Cambridge House and Powells books. The competition has also established themselves in the eBook market as well with Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and Powells Books leading the way. Amazon, Barnes and Noble and Powells books are the strongest competition in the market today. These three businesses are in the top 5 for online book sales. Abe books and Audible books are also in the top 5 but both are owned by Amazon (www.newser.com, retrieved on 14 Oct, 2012) which makes Amazon the leader in online book sales.

Amazon is a household name and this is their advantage. CanGo has a strong loyal customer base but can’t compete with the size of Amazon. CanGo and Amazon both have problems with shipping and customer service (NY Times, March 2012). Amazon not only sells books but they have countless products on their website to choose from which would appeal to those looking for books and a more. CanGo’s website is more for books and music. Due to a customer’s needs, Amazon’s website could be either a strength or a weakness. Amazon has an eReader and develops most of their eBooks for this reader without many other forms for customers to download their books (Amazon.com, retrieved on 14 Oct, 2012).

Barnes and Noble (B&N), is a well-established bookseller of both hardcopy and eBooks. They have the Nook ereader which they use for the majority of their eBook sales. B&N has a LendMe feature that allows customers to share an eBook they have purchased with family and friends; this is a substantial strength because no other eBook retailer offers this feature....
