1. What is diversity? Why is diversity valued?

Diversity is differences in culture, heritage, religion, race, ethnicity, physical appearance, mental capabilities, music, and even art. Diversity should be valued so discrimination and segregation can be eliminated. No one person is exactly like another. Diversity shapes everything around us, especially in America where so many different peoples come together.

2. What is ethnocentrism? In what ways can ethnocentrism be detrimental to a society?

Ethnocentrism is thinking that one’s own culture, beliefs, and way of life are superior to another’s and when false assumptions are made based on limited experience. It is detrimental because it leads people to judge and form stereotypes of others before they have a chance to discover the truth.

3. Define emigration and immigration.

Perspective has a lot to do with the definition of emigration and immigration. For example, if an individual from a different country decided to move to America, they would consider themselves an emigrant to America. To Americans, this individual would be considered an immigrant from whatever country he or she was from.

4. What are some of the ways groups of people are identified?

There are majority groups and minority groups. There are four types of minority groups: racial, ethnic, religious, and gender groups. Racial groups are set apart by physical differences. Ethnic groups are set apart because of culture or nationality. Religious groups are set apart due to their beliefs and practices. Gender groups are set apart because it is believed that one gender is less than the other.
